Choosing Outfits
Coordinate rather than match exactly. Similar tones and a shared color palette photograph better than identical outfits, which can read as a little too matched in photos. Solid colors and soft textures generally work better than busy patterns, small prints, or large logos.
Two outfits is a good default — one slightly more dressed up, one more casual — which gives your gallery some visual variety without turning the session into a full wardrobe change marathon.
Quick check: if you're unsure between two outfits, bring both. It's far easier to choose once you see how something actually photographs in the light of your session.
Choosing a Location
The best engagement session locations are either meaningful to you as a couple — where you met, where you got engaged, a favorite neighborhood spot — or simply offer good visual variety: a mix of greenery, architecture, and open space. Austin has no shortage of either kind of location, from downtown streets to Hill Country backdrops.
If you're choosing between a few options, think about what feels most like the two of you, rather than what you've seen photographed the most on Pinterest. A location that's personally meaningful will hold up better over time than one chosen purely for its backdrop.
How Long It Takes
Most engagement sessions run one to two hours, depending on how many outfit changes or locations are included. Golden hour — the hour or so before sunset — is the most requested time slot, since the light is soft and flattering, but a well-chosen indoor or shaded location can work beautifully at other times of day too.

See Real Wedding Stories →If You Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera
This is one of the most common things couples tell us before their session, and it's almost never still true by the end of it. We guide posing, movement, and interaction throughout — you don't need to know what to do with your hands or how to stand. Most couples notice themselves relaxing within the first ten minutes, once they're moving and talking rather than standing still and posing for a camera.
Weather and Backup Plans
Texas weather can shift quickly, so it's worth having a loose backup plan — an alternate date, or a nearby indoor or covered option — in case conditions change. A little flexibility here saves a lot of stress on the day itself.
When to Schedule It
Many couples schedule their engagement session a few months after getting engaged, often timed around a season or light quality that fits the mood they want for the gallery. If your wedding collection includes an engagement session, it's also a good opportunity to get comfortable in front of your photographer before the wedding day itself.
