Editorial Wedding Photography at Eberly
South Lamar, Austin, TexasA former print shop turned restaurant and event space, with the historic Cedar Tavern bar at its heart.
A Restaurant Built From Austin's History
Eberly occupies a building on South Lamar Boulevard that was once a print shop — part of the venue's identity is preserving that piece of Austin's working history rather than erasing it. The space now houses a full restaurant and several distinct event areas: The Study, a more formal dining room; the Cedar Tavern, a lounge built around a historic bar relocated piece by piece from Greenwich Village in New York City; and the Rooftop, an open-air space with downtown views.
Because Eberly operates as a working restaurant with an in-house culinary program, couples get contemporary American food and a full bar built into the venue itself, rather than needing to bring in outside catering. The atmosphere leans toward an artistic, slightly bohemian energy — a nod to the venue's stated mission of preserving Austin's creative spirit.
Industrial Character With Restaurant-Level Hospitality
Eberly suits couples who want a downtown-adjacent celebration without a generic hotel ballroom feel. The mix of exposed industrial bones and warm, considered interior design gives it an editorial quality that photographs well without much additional styling. It's also a practical choice for couples who'd rather not manage a separate caterer, since food and bar service are already part of what the venue offers.
We usually tell our couples this is one of the easier venues to photograph well without a lot of extra equipment — the existing light and design already do a lot of the work.
Perfect for Couples Who...
Want a downtown-adjacent feel without downtown hotel pricing
Like industrial, editorial spaces more than traditional ballrooms
Would rather not manage a separate outside caterer
Want multiple distinct spaces (bar, dining room, rooftop) under one roof
Have 80–150 guests and want flexibility across ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception
Light, Layout, and Timing at Eberly
Natural Light
The Rooftop offers the most natural light during the day, while The Study and Cedar Tavern lean moodier and more atmospheric, especially after sunset.
Indoor Spaces
The Cedar Tavern's historic bar and dim, warm lighting make for rich, character-driven portraits, but benefit from some additional lighting for group shots.
Golden Hour
The Rooftop is the strongest spot for golden hour portraits, with downtown Austin as a backdrop as the light shifts.
Reception Lighting
Evening receptions inside lean candle-lit and warm in tone — beautiful, but worth planning for if bright, even lighting is a priority for specific shots.
Common Planning Questions
Is Eberly better for daytime or evening weddings?
Evening. The Cedar Tavern and The Study are designed around warm, low light, and the Rooftop's best moment is golden hour into sunset.
Where are the best portrait locations?
The Rooftop for natural light and skyline views; the Cedar Tavern for moody, character-driven portraits.
Is a first look recommended here?
It can work well if your ceremony is offsite, since it gives more flexibility with the Rooftop's daylight window before it closes.
What's the rain backup?
Eberly's indoor spaces (The Study and Cedar Tavern) are fully indoors, so weather isn't a concern except for Rooftop-specific portraits.
What's the best season to get married here?
Any season works indoors. If the Rooftop matters to you, spring and fall evenings tend to have the most comfortable temperatures.
Can family photos happen indoors?
Yes — The Study has enough open floor space for group formals if outdoor portraits aren't a priority.
Is flash allowed?
We haven't encountered restrictions on flash photography at Eberly, but always confirm current venue policies directly when you book.
What We'd Suggest
If your ceremony is elsewhere (as with a church ceremony followed by an Eberly reception), build in realistic travel time between locations before cocktail hour begins.
If portraits on the Rooftop matter to you, plan your arrival or cocktail hour to take advantage of late-afternoon light rather than waiting until full dark.
Ask the venue directly about which spaces are available for your guest count and whether multiple spaces can be reserved together for ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception.
Since Eberly is also an active restaurant, confirm your event's exclusivity and timing with the venue well in advance.

A Downtown-Adjacent Celebration, Start to Finish
Sonya and Mark's ceremony at Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church was followed by a reception at Eberly — see the full story, from the church sanctuary to the Cedar Tavern's historic bar.
What stood out to us shooting there: the Cedar Tavern doesn't need much help. The existing bar lighting and dark wood already carry a mood, so most of our work was just staying out of the way of it.
