Austin wedding photography booking

How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Austin Wedding Photographer?

The short answer: sooner than you think. The longer answer depends on your specific date, the time of year, and what kind of photographer you're looking for.

Here's what we see happen in Austin year after year, and what it means for your booking timeline.

The Austin Wedding Season Reality

Austin's most popular wedding months are March through May and September through November. The weather is beautiful, the light is golden, and Hill Country venues are at their best. Which means photographers with strong portfolios are fully booked 14 to 18 months out for those months.

If you're planning a Saturday wedding in October 2027, you should be looking for a photographer right now, in early 2026.

Peak season in Austin: Spring (March, April, May) and Fall (September, October, November). If your date falls in these months, 12 to 18 months advance notice is the norm for experienced photographers.

What Happens If You Wait

The photographers who are still available 6 months before a peak-season wedding date are either newer to the industry, have had a cancellation (which does happen), or have pricing that reflects lower demand. None of these are automatically bad things, but you'll have significantly fewer options.

We've had couples come to us 3 months before their wedding date. Sometimes we have availability. Often we don't. It's worth checking, but don't count on it.

Timeline by Season

Spring and Fall Saturdays (Peak)

Book 14 to 18 months in advance. These fill first. Your venue will likely require a deposit around the same time, so plan to book your photographer at the same stage as your venue.

Summer (June, July, August)

Austin summers are hot, but weddings still happen. These dates book 8 to 12 months out for most experienced photographers. Indoor venues and evening ceremonies are popular in summer.

Winter (December, January, February)

More flexibility here, except for the two weeks around Christmas and New Year's Eve, which book out early. December weekend availability opens up more than people expect.

Weekday or Sunday Weddings

Significantly more flexibility. If you're open to a Friday or Sunday celebration, your booking window is much more forgiving, often 6 to 9 months is fine.

What to Do Right Now

  1. Finalize your date and venue first, even a tentative one
  2. Browse portfolios and identify 3 to 5 photographers whose work resonates with you
  3. Reach out to check availability, not just to inquire
  4. Have a budget range in mind before the first conversation
  5. Ask about the contract and what secures your date

The retainer, not the signed contract alone, is what truly holds your date. Make sure you understand what locks in your booking.
